AI startups mint billionaires at unprecedented pace
A June 2026 survey of over 3,400 AI company leaders found that startups built around artificial intelligence are hitting billion-dollar valuations in 3.5 years—about half the time it took pre-generative AI, and often with just half the staff. With earlier cash-outs and liquidity events, founders and employees can see 'life-changing' money well before any IPO, reshaping expectations about tech wealth.
- AI startups reach $1B in 3.5 years, down from 7 years
- Staff sizes are about half of earlier unicorns
- Founders access wealth before IPOs via secondary sales
- ElevenLabs did $100M in staff share sales at $6.6B value
- Early liquidity creates complex personal financial choices
