Anthropic says Claude now leads a quarter of its AI research

Anthropic says its AI model, Claude, now handles 26% of its research and development work, up from nearly zero at the start of the year. Claude can complete most tasks from a broad prompt, but always under human supervision. According to Anthropic, about 90% of their R&D work now involves Claude to some extent. The company argues that sharing these metrics will help society track when AI starts developing itself without oversight.

Why it mattersThis is one of the first times a leading AI company has quantified how much of its own development is being done by an AI model, offering a window into progress toward self-improving systems. If and when AI can build the next version of itself alone, oversight could get much harder.
