California enacts law limiting AI use in worker management
California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed laws restricting employers' use of artificial intelligence in firing, disciplining, or surveilling workers. The measures ban employers from firing or disciplining employees based solely on automated decision-making systems and require human review for significant AI-driven employment decisions. Businesses must also notify employees in writing if AI is a primary factor in job actions. Additional limits bar AI from predicting workers' emotional states using biometric data.
- Employers banned from solely using AI for firings
- Human review now required for AI-driven discipline
- Written notice mandated for AI-based terminations
- AI cannot be used to predict workers' emotional state
