GitHub Copilot gets new ways to learn your codebase
GitHub's Copilot AI assistant can now follow more detailed, project-specific rules built right into your codebase. You can add custom instruction files, package step-by-step 'agent skills,' and even create custom agents for larger workflows. There’s also new support for hooking Copilot up to external tools via something called the Model Context Protocol. These options let Copilot better match the way your team works, with less manual setup every time.
- Define project rules in copilot-instructions.md
- Add path-specific guidance for different file types
- Bundle repeatable tasks as agent skills folders
- Custom agents handle larger multi-step jobs
- Model Context Protocol connects Copilot to outside tools
