Google will replace Gemini Gems with new 'skills' feature
Google has announced it will discontinue the Gemini app's 'Gems' feature, which allows users to create custom AI assistants, and replace it with a streamlined 'skills' system starting November 17, 2026. Existing user-created Gems will be automatically migrated to this new format, so users will not need to take action. Both Gems and skills enable custom instructions for the Gemini AI, but skills are designed for easier access within the app.
- Gems will become skills starting November 17, 2026
- Migration of user data will be automatic, no user action needed
- Skills feature makes custom assistants more accessible in the app
- Gems and skills both allow personalized AI instructions
