OpenAI rolling out invisible watermark on ChatGPT text in EU
OpenAI will soon add an invisible watermark—essentially a detectable pattern in word choices—to all ChatGPT and Codex responses in the European Union, meeting new EU rules that require marking AI-generated content. Outside the EU, this watermarking will stay off by default but can be turned on by developers using the API. OpenAI notes its method, called textGrain, isn’t foolproof: editing or rewriting can weaken or erase the watermark.
- EU gets watermarking by default, elsewhere it's opt-in
- API users worldwide can enable watermarking
- textGrain inserts subtle word patterns, invisible to humans
- Detector access limited, not public at launch
- Editing text can remove the watermark
