Google inks deal for near-zero emissions steel
Google says it’s buying credits tied to a new type of green steel, made at Stegra’s plant in Sweden. Instead of coal, the process uses renewable electricity to create hydrogen, cutting emissions by up to 95% compared to standard steelmaking. Google will receive certificates for up to 91,000 metric tons in the plant’s first year. The company estimates this could shrink the carbon footprint of its data centers by as much as 40%.
