TSMC and Samsung to buy ASML's $400M chipmaking tool

TSMC and Samsung, the two biggest chip manufacturers, have committed to buying ASML's latest High NA EUV lithography machine—price tag around $400 million. Both plan to use the tool to make more advanced chips starting in 2028 (Samsung) and 2030 (TSMC). The companies will also work with ASML to move the industry to larger, 12-inch photomasks, which should boost chip yields and lower costs.

Why it mattersThese tools enable tinier, faster chips, essential for everything from AI processors to memory. The move signals which manufacturers will be able to keep up as making leading-edge chips becomes even trickier and pricier.
