Databricks adds REGISTER, UNREGISTER APIs for data catalog portability
Databricks introduced new REGISTER and UNREGISTER APIs to help organizations move data tables between data catalogs without copying or rewriting files. The REGISTER endpoint lets you attach an existing table to a new catalog, while UNREGISTER (now added to the Apache Iceberg REST spec) tells the old catalog to release the table cleanly. This aims to keep data and metadata portable across different platforms.
- APIs avoid copying or rewriting data files
- REGISTER attaches tables to new catalogs
- UNREGISTER lets old catalog release ownership
- Enhances interoperability for open table formats
