Doom runs inside an SQL database, powered by SQL queries

A developer managed to run the classic shooter Doom using only SQL queries inside CedarDB, with help from a minimal Python client for inputs and display. The SQLDoom project handles game logic through about 1,300 lines of SQL across 89 expressions, storing everything as relational tables. Unlike previous attempts, this version generates full-color 640×480 graphics, matching the look of the original game.

Why it mattersThis experiment shows how powerful — or willfully misused — SQL databases can be, blurring the line between storage and computation. It also highlights the persistence of creative programming hacks for classic games.
