Fervo Energy launches next-gen geothermal plant in Utah
Fervo Energy, a geothermal startup, has started delivering grid power from its new Cape Station in Utah—the first large-scale project of its kind globally to achieve this using advanced geothermal engineering. The initial 33-megawatt unit is live, with Fervo aiming for a 500-megawatt target as construction continues. Shell Energy in California is the project's first commercial customer, with support from Google for the expansion.
- First major engineered geothermal plant sells power to grid
- Cape Station will reach 500 MW when complete
- Project uses oil-industry drilling to create underground reservoirs
- Shell Energy is initial commercial buyer
- Google-backed expansion scheduled for 2028
