Ecosia swaps Mistral for open-weight AI models
Ecosia, the German search engine, is moving away from using Mistral's AI and switching to open-weight models like Qwen, GLM, and Kimi. The change is happening through a partnership with Melious, a German AI platform. Ecosia's CEO says this approach has roughly cut their costs in half and improved performance, after they ran into repeated technical issues and disappointing results with Mistral.
- Ecosia moved from Mistral to Melious-powered AI models
- Cited recurring server problems and poor model quality on Mistral
- Switch includes Chinese models like Qwen, GLM, and Kimi
- Reports a cost reduction of about 50%
- Now has access to multiple models, not tied to one developer
