GitHub Copilot adds desktop automation on Mac and Windows
GitHub has rolled out a public preview for 'computer use,' a feature letting Copilot's command-line tool and desktop app operate other applications on Mac and Windows. The tool can click, type, scroll, and gather info from software that lacks modern interfaces. GitHub recommends API-based tools when possible, as desktop automation can be unpredictable. This update follows similar moves by OpenAI's Codex and Anthropic's Claude Code.
- Feature works through accessibility controls and screenshots
- Supports Mac and Windows apps without public APIs
- Users choose permission settings per app or session
- Enterprise restrictions override individual settings
- OpenAI and Anthropic added similar features earlier
