Google agrees to buy 1 million carbon credits from Mitti Labs

Google has signed a four-year deal to buy one million carbon credits from Indian startup Mitti Labs, in what both call the largest public agreement yet for methane-cutting projects in rice farming. The credits will come from farms in three Indian states, with farmers paid to use methods that reduce methane and water use. The companies aren’t saying how much Google is paying, but the agreement runs through 2030.

Why it mattersTech companies like Google face pressure to cut their climate impact as their data centers get hungrier for power. This sort of deal signals growing scrutiny on the credibility and scale of carbon offset projects—or how tech giants claim to clean up after themselves.
