Meta explains water and energy use in its data centers
Meta has responded to concerns about data centers' environmental impact, clarifying how its facilities use water and energy. According to the company, Meta’s AI-optimized, liquid-cooled data centers mainly use closed-loop systems that circulate water and glycol without significant consumption, especially in drought-prone areas. For energy, Meta says it pays not only its own bills but also for necessary grid upgrades. Both energy and water usage are carefully managed to lessen community impact.
- Meta's cooling uses closed-loop systems to reduce water usage
- Data centers sometimes source water from non-potable wells
- Meta claims annual water use is less than a typical golf course
- Company pays for required energy infrastructure upgrades
