Tesla cuts memory in upcoming AI chips amid shortages
Elon Musk says Tesla is halving the memory in its next-gen AI5 chip to 72 GB and trimming the AI6 chip by a third to 144 GB, citing tight global memory supply. He claims Optimus, Tesla’s humanoid robot, won’t lose performance thanks to higher on-chip cache. The chips are vital to robotics and next-level driver assistance, with mass production expected in 2027.
- AI5 chip memory cut from 144 GB to 72 GB
- AI6 reduced to 144 GB of memory, down by a third
- Chips are built for Optimus robot and FSD use
- Chips made by TSMC and Samsung at 2nm process
- Mass production of AI5 targeted for 2027
