Google Docs and Drive add full markdown file support
Google Docs and Drive will now open, edit, and fully render markdown (.md) files natively, without any format conversions. That means you can work on markdown documents—links, tables, all formatting—inside Google Workspace just like a regular document. The update, rolling out over the next two weeks, supports real-time edits and comments and is prompted by markdown's popularity in AI workflows. No settings changes required; it's on by default.
- Opens, edits, and renders .md files in Docs and Drive
- Full real-time collaboration and comments supported
- No need to convert markdown to Google Docs format
- Update rolls out to all Workspace accounts by mid-October
- Improves AI and human collaboration on documents
