SpaceX may build its own fiber optic gear for Starlink
SpaceX is reportedly considering making its own fiber optic cables and components for its Starlink internet service, mirroring how it cut rocket launch costs by bringing manufacturing in-house. The move would help limit reliance on Chinese suppliers—now facing US restrictions—and ensure supply for SpaceX's planned 10 gigawatt AI data center buildout. About 60% of that capacity would go to SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI, according to a report.
- SpaceX may manufacture fiber optic cables for Starlink
- Current suppliers include US and Chinese firms
- US restrictions are complicating Chinese imports
- 60% of new data center compute reserved for in-house use
- Star Mine data center launch targeted for 2027
