Starcloud AI hardware headed to lunar orbit on Firefly spacecraft
Starcloud will send its new AI computing hardware, the SC-1L payload, into lunar orbit aboard Firefly Aerospace's Elytra vehicle, launching no earlier than 2028. The goal: show it can process and transmit data in deep space, a step toward orbital AI data centers. After carrying out its job as a relay for a lunar lander, SC-1L will use onboard cameras to process images with onboard AI before returning results to Earth.
- SC-1L payload will launch after 2028 on Firefly’s Elytra
- Demonstrates AI data processing capabilities in lunar orbit
- Uses onboard cameras for autonomous navigation and tracking
- Part of Starcloud’s plan for orbital AI data centers
- Firefly’s orbiter expected to operate for at least five years
