Ring debuts smart lock with manual battery recharge

Ring, known for its video doorbells, is launching its first smart lock—a $249 keyless deadbolt that solves the dead battery problem with a built-in dial. If the battery dies, you can just twist the dial several times to generate enough power to unlock the door via fingerprint, keypad, or the Ring app. No need for a backup key or emergency battery. The lock, which ships early next year, works with Alexa and other Ring devices.

Why it mattersDead batteries have stopped many from embracing smart locks, since getting locked out defeats the point. Ring's take ditches backup keys for a simple, always-available solution—and further tightens its grip on the connected home market.
