Unusual GPU placement slashes hotspot temperatures by 19°C
An enthusiast modder found that mounting a graphics card vertically near the front or side panel, in the path of intake fans, brought GPU hotspot temperatures down by up to 19°C compared to the standard motherboard slot. The GPU core, memory, and voltage regulator also ran cooler. Further tweaks balanced GPU and CPU cooling, landing at a 14°C GPU drop and over 3°C cooler CPU.
- Modder placed GPU vertically by intake fans
- Maximum GPU hotspot drop was 19°C
- GPU core, VRAM, and VRM temperatures all improved
- Further tweaks cooled CPU by over 3°C
- Setup requires PCIe riser cable and case modifications
