arXiv caps monthly submissions to fight AI-generated spam
arXiv, the academic paper repository, is now limiting researchers to two submissions per month and three active submissions at a time. The move comes as AI tools have made it easier to flood the site with low-quality or AI-written work, overloading volunteer moderators and delaying publication for legitimate research. Submissions more than doubled in two years, especially in computer science. arXiv says AI-fueled spam is consuming disproportionate resources.
- Researchers now limited to 2 submissions per month
- No more than 3 active submissions at once
- AI-generated low-quality papers blamed for surge
- arXiv saw submissions double in two years
- Volunteer moderators overwhelmed by paper volume
