OpenAI adds opt-in text watermarking to its API
OpenAI now lets developers add watermarks to text generated by its API, aiming to help identify AI-written content. The feature, called textGrain, subtly tweaks word choices to leave a detectable pattern. Unlike Anthropic, which applies watermarking by default in all regions, OpenAI's API watermarking is off unless a developer enables it. The company will soon make watermarking automatic for users in the European Union to meet new transparency laws.
- OpenAI's watermarking is called textGrain
- Developers must opt in to enable it
- Watermarking is automatic in the EU soon
- Anthropic applies watermarking by default
- No changes needed to use on enabled API projects
