Databricks introduces Lakebase branching for coding agents
Databricks has launched Lakebase, a Postgres-based database platform that lets AI coding agents create fully isolated branches of a database in seconds. Each branch uses a copy-on-write method, so parallel agents can safely apply changes and run tests without colliding or risking production data. Idle branches don’t incur costs, and teams can spin them up or retire them as needed. It's aimed at smoothing development when multiple agents work in parallel.
- Lakebase branches databases instantly using copy-on-write
- Agents get isolated environments for schema and test changes
- Idle branches scale to zero, saving on compute costs
- Supports multi-environment and single-workspace setups
- Branching helps avoid database collisions and data leaks
