GitHub Copilot to choose local or cloud for code tasks
GitHub Copilot will soon decide on its own whether your coding requests run on your device or get sent to Microsoft's cloud. This "Auto routing" system—promised by the end of October—factors in task details and available model caches. Copilot users in the app, VS Code, or CLI can opt for automatic or force their request to a local model. But Microsoft isn't disclosing what code or context might be sent to the cloud or if you can stop it.
- Copilot now has automatic routing between local and cloud models
- Auto routing launches by end of October
- Developers can also manually pick local models
- Microsoft hasn't said what context is sent to the cloud
- Exact controls for local-only use are still unclear
