Amazon revamps tablets as Alexa line with Android and Google Play

Amazon unveiled a major overhaul of its tablet lineup, discontinuing the Fire series in favor of new, higher-priced Alexa Tablets that now run standard Android with full Google Play access. The three new models — ranging from 8 to 12 inches and starting at $230 — feature upgraded hardware and premium aluminum designs. The top-tier Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, aimed partly at work use, includes options for a matte display, keyboard, and stylus, with prices reaching $790 for a fully equipped version.

Why it mattersAmazon's shift positions its tablets as direct competitors to Apple’s iPad and high-end Android devices, abandoning the prior low-cost, Fire-only approach. Full Play Store compatibility addresses long-standing complaints from users restricted to Amazon's own app ecosystem.
