Senator presses for details on federal license plate surveillance
Senator Ron Wyden has asked the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy to release a privacy review that examined federal surveillance programs using license plate reader data. The request follows a report that the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program aggregates license plate information from city systems and private vendors such as Flock and Axon. The review, conducted by MITRE in 2024, has not yet been made public despite demands for transparency.
- Wyden requested release of the MITRE privacy assessment
- HIDTA database collects city license plate reader data federally
- Federal government uses data from companies including Flock and Axon
- The ONDCP's review remains undisclosed as of 2024
- Wyden cited limited transparency over these programs
